Overview

This document is an operating guide and warranty for a Zenith Advanced System 3 Color TV, published in 1989. It provides comprehensive information on the TV's functions, installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Zenith Advanced System 3 Color TV is a menu-operated television designed to receive Multi-channel Television Sound (MTS) and Second Audio Program (SAP) broadcasts. It features on-screen displays for channel and time, as well as various menus for adjusting video, audio, and other settings. The TV can be connected to multiple signal sources, including outdoor antennas, cable TV systems, VCRs, camcorders, home video games, video disc players, stereo receivers, and Super VHS (S-VHS) VCRs.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 120 volt 60 Hertz AC household current.
  • Antenna Input: 75-ohm RF antenna-type connections for UHF/VHF antennas or cable TV lines.
  • Auxiliary A-V Input/Loop: Jacks for receiving audio/video signals from external components and for sending signals to other components.
  • Fixed A-V Output: Jacks for sending fixed audio and video levels to other components for recording.
  • Variable Audio Out Jacks: For sending audio signals to external speakers or sound amplification equipment, with a switch to turn TV speakers on/off.
  • Remote Control: MBR3000 Multi-Brand Remote Control, pre-programmed for Zenith TVs, VCRs, and Cable-TV Decoders, but programmable for other brands. Uses two (2) AAA alkaline batteries.
  • Tuning Bands: B-CAST (Broadcast) for channels 2-83 (U.S. 14-83 with optional tuner modification), CATV, HRC, and ICC for channels 0, 00, 1-13, and 14-120 (U.S. 134 with optional tuner modification).

Usage Features:

  • On-Screen Menus: The TV is menu-operated, with adjustments appearing as a list on the screen. Main menus include SOURCE, VIDEO, AUDIO, FEATURES, and SETUP.
  • Front Panel Controls: Includes Enter, Adjust, Select, Menu, Volume Up/Down, Channel Up/Down, and Off/On buttons.

  • Mute Display: Appears when sound is muted or no signal is detected.
  • Source Selection: Allows choosing between ANTENNA, CABLE, A-V VCR, and Y/C inputs.

  • Parental Control (PAR CNTRL): Allows "locking out" a channel for up to 12 hours with a 4-digit code.
  • Color Sentry (COLOR SNTRY): Switches to factory settings for COLOR and TINT, providing an excellent TV picture. Can be turned off for manual adjustment.

  • Redi-Plug/BASE-TAC Redi-Plug: Access ports for specific cable TV decoders to enable viewing of premium scrambled channels while retaining full remote control.

Maintenance Features:

  • Ventilation: Proper ventilation is crucial; do not block vents to prolong TV life.
  • Picture Glass Cleaning: Clean regularly with glass cleaner. For dust accumulation, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with a mild fabric softener or dishwashing detergent solution.
  • Tinted-Glass Panel Removal and Care: The tinted glass panel is breakable and heavy. It can be removed for cleaning the picture tube or the panel itself. Instructions are provided for safe removal and reinstallation of the hook-shaped clips and locking wedges.
  • Cabinet Care: For non-wood cabinets, use a soft cloth with mild soap solution or dishwashing detergent. For wood cabinets, use furniture cleaner and polish.
  • Vacation Preparation: Unplug the power cord and disconnect antenna lead-in wires to protect against lightning or power surges. Note that memory features will need to be reset upon return.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides a checklist for common picture and sound interference issues, as well as problems with remote control and TV memory features.
  • Battery Replacement: Instructions for replacing the remote control batteries (two AAA alkaline batteries).
  • Owner Registration Card: A card to be filled out and mailed to Zenith for product registration and participation in a drawing for a full TV refund. This helps Zenith contact owners in case of safety problems.
