The smart charger has the following features:
• Multiple charge detection methods -dV (typical) and dT/dt.
Typically,theindicationthatthebatteryisfullychargedis
detectedbyaslightdropinitsvoltage(-dV).However,ifthe
batteriesareunusedforalongtime,theymaydisplaythe
samedropinvoltageintheearlypartofthechargecycleeven
iftheyarenotfullycharged.Thisisafalseindication.Inorder
topreventtheterminationofchargecycleduetothisfalse
indication,thereisanintegraltimerbuiltinthechargerwhichwill
disregardthe–dVfortherstminutesofthechargecycle.
Thebatterypacksarebuiltwithathermistor.Thesmartcharger
constantlymonitorsthebatterypacktemperature.Abuilt-in
temperaturechargecontrol(+dT/dt)securesoptimalcharge.
• Safety timer termination.
Incasethebatteriesdonotexhibitsufcient–dV/dtforthe
chargertodetect,thereisaninternalsafetytimerwhichis
custom-programmedforthebatterypacksusedintheDTR
®
Model 8510.
• Fast charging cycle.
Thischargecyclesuppliesamaximum900mAchargeuntil-dV
is detected.
• Integral start timer to prevent initial, false -dV detection.
Afewbatterycellsmayhaveavoltagedrop(-dV)intherst
partofthechargecycle.Thisisespeciallytrueforbatterycells
whichhavebeenidleforalongperiodoftime.Becauseofthis,a
start-timerbuiltintothechargerprevents-dVdetectionintherst
minutesofthechargercycle.
• Reverse polarity/short circuit protection.
Thechargerisprotectedagainstreversepolaritybyan
automaticallyresettablepolyswitchfuseontheoutput.
• LED status indicator (seeTable8-1onpage54).
• Universal input voltage.
Withtheuseofaproperpowercord,thechargercanbe
connectedtostandardACreceptacleanywhereintheworld
withouttheneedforanexternaltransformer.
