Chapter 13-10
13.7 Removing Exhaust Gases from the System
Warning: When using the microstream CO
2
measurement on
patients who are receiving or have recently received
anesthetics, connect the outlet to a scavenging system, or
to the anesthesia machine/ventilator, to avoid exposing
medical staff to anesthetics.
Use an exhaust tube to remove the sample gas to a scavenging system.
Attach it to the outlet connector of microstream CO
2
sensor.
13.8 Safety Information
Warning:
Do not position the sensor cables or tubing in any manner that may
cause entanglement or strangulation.
Reuse, disassembly, cleaning, disinfecting or sterilizing the single
patient use cannula kits and on-airway adapters may compromise
functionality and system performance leading to a user or patient
hazard. Performance is not guaranteed if an item labeled as single
patient use is reused.
Inspect the microstream on-airway adapters, microstream sampling kits
and CO
2
airway adapters for damage prior to use. Do not use the
microstream on-airway adapters, microstream sampling kits and CO
2
airway adapters if they appear to be damaged or broken.
Replace the microstream on-airway adapters, microstream sampling
kits and CO
2
airway adapters if excessive secretions are observed.
Monitor the CO
2
waveform (Capnogram). If you see changes or
abnormal appearance check the airway adapters and the sampling tube.
Replace it if needed.
Monitor the CO
2
waveform (Capnogram) for elevated baseline. Elevated
baseline can be caused by sensor or patient problems.
Do not operate the CO
2
module when it is wet or has exterior
condensation.
Do not use device on patients that can not tolerate the withdrawal of
50 ml/min±10 ml/min from the airway or patients that can not tolerate
the added dead space to the airway.
Do not connect the exhaust tube to the ventilator circuit.
