ship.
Burn hazard from gasoline floating on water which
is ignited can cause death or serious injury. Gasoline
will float on top of water and can burn. If the boat is
abandoned, swim upwind, far enough to avoid fuel
that can spread over the surface of the water.
Intheeventthatthevesselbeginstotakeonwater,turnonthebilgepumptoevacuatewaterandslowits
accumulaon,andtrytodeterminethesourceofthewater.Acollisionwithanunderwaterobjectcancause
thehulltodevelopaleak.Aloosenghoseclamponapieceofequipmentcancausealeak.Trytorepair
theleakifpossible.Ifaleakisthreateningthesafetyofyouandyourpassengers,callorsignalforassistance.
•Turnonbilgepump(s).
•AccessPFDs,passthemouttoeveryone,andputthemon.
•Idenfysourceofleakandtrytostoptheleakandooding.
•STAYWITHTHEBOAT!Aboatwillusuallyoatevenifthereismajorhulldamage.Rescuerscanspota
boatmucheasierthanaheadbobbinginthewater.
•Signalorcallforhelp.
•Ifotherswereonboard,trytolocatethem,makesurethattheyareconsciousandthattheycanswim.
• Immersioninwaterspeedsthelossofbodyheatandcanleadtohypothermia(theabnormallowering
ofinternalbodytemperature).
• Ifotherswereonboard,trytolocatethem,makesurethattheyareconsciousandtheycanswim.
• Ifpossible,accesslifejackets(PFDs),passthemouttoeveryone,andputthemon.
• STAYWITHTHEBOAT!Aboatwillusuallyoatevenifthereismajorhulldamage.Rescuerscanspota
boatmucheasierthanaheadbobbinginthewater.
• Signalorcallforhelp.
• Immersioninwaterspeedsthelossofbodyheatandcanleadtohypothermia(theabnormallowering
ofinternalbodytemperature).
• Remaincalm.Donotthrashaboutortrytoremoveclothingorfootwear.Thisleadstoexhausonand
increasesthelossofairthatmaykeepyouaoat.
•Keepyourlifejacket(PFD)on.
•Keepyourkneesbent.
•Floatonyourbackandpaddleslowly
tosafety.
•Immediatelyaccountforallpassengers.
•Checkforinjuries.
•Ifanypersonisinthewatermakesure
theyhaveproperotaondevices.
•Assessthehullfordamage.
•Acvatethebilgepump(s)toreduceany
ooding.
• Try to operate the boat to keep the
damagedareaabovewater.
•Ifnecessary,callorsignalfor
assistance.
