• Ifitisasimpletouch,youmayneedonlytoinspectthehull.
• Ifyouareaground,assessthesituaonbeforereacng.Insomecases,throwingtheboatintoreverse
cancausemoredamage.
• Checkforleaksandimmediatelystopanywaterfromenteringtheboat.
• Inspectthehull,steeringsystemandpropulsionsystemfordamage.
• Maneuvertheboattosafewateronlyifthehullandalloperangsystemsareinsasfactoryoperang
condion.Otherwise,callorsignalforassistance.
• Immediatelyreacttoapersonwhohasfallenoverboardbysoundinganalarm.
• Keepthevicmconstantlyinyoursight.
• Ifanotherpassengerisonboard,assignthemtolookatandkeeppoinngatthepersoninthewater.They
aretodonothingelsebutstayfocusedonthepersoninthewaterandtopointatthem.
• ThrowthepersonalifepreservereveniftheyarewearingaPFD.Itwillserveasamarkerinthewaterand
willprovideaddionalotaon.
• Immediatelysloworstoptheboatandsafelycircletowardthevicmassoonaspossible.
• Keepthevicmonthehelmsideofthevesselsoastokeepthevicmconstantlyinyoursight.
• Whenalmostalongside,shutotheengine.
• Assistthepersonintotheboat.
• Swimtorescueadrowningvicmonlyasalastresort.
• Immediateresuscitaoniscrical!Itmaybepossibletoreviveadrowningvicmwhohasbeenunder
waterforsomemeandshowsnosignoflife.StartCPRimmediatelyandgetthevicmtoahospitalas
quicklyaspossible.
• Keepthevicmwarm.
• Usecareinhandling.Spinalinjurymayexistifthevicmfelloverboard.
• Callandsignalforhelp.
In an emergency, you maybe far from professional medical assistance.Be prepared
andknowhowtouseyourrstaidkit.Beawareofanyspecialmedicalcondionsofyour
passengers.
Ifyouexperienceapropulsion,electrical,steeringorcontrolfailure,immediatelyshut
otheengine.Ifitissafetodosoandyouarequalied,thentrytodeterminethecauseof
thefailureandrepair.Otherwise,callorsignalforassistance.Anchortheboatifdriingwill
putyouandothersindanger.
Towing or being towed stresses the boats,
hardware and lines. Failure of any part
can seriously injure people or damage the
boat.
A recreaonal boat towing another should be a last resort due to the potenal for
damagingoneorbothboats.TheCoastGuardoraprivatesalvagecompanyisbeerequipped
forthisacvity.Arecreaonalboatmayassistbystandingby,andpossiblybykeepingthe
disabledboat’sbowataproperangleunlhelparrives.Onlywhencondionsareideal—
thatis,watersarecalm,disabledboatissmall,appropriatehardwareisavailable,andoneor
bothskippersknowthecorrecttechnique—shouldarecreaonalboattowanother.
