4.8: Installing DIMM Memory Modules
Increasing the amount of system memory is the most common "on-site" enhancement that is likely to be made to your
Ciara Enterprise/Discovery 945GTP computer. Increasing your computer’s memory usually involves adding main
memory. DDR2 Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (DDR2 SDRAM) is packaged only in 240-pin Dual
In-Line Memory Modules 1.8 V (DIMMs).
Your Ciara Enterprise/Discovery 945GTP uses only DIMM memory modules. Each DIMM module can have a
capacity of 256, 512 MB or 1GB. The minimum capacity is 128 MB and the maximum capacity is 4 GB. Your system
supports only DDR2 PC400, PC533 and PC667 memory speeds. Furthermore, the memory has to be of the SPD type
(Serial Presence Detect) to insure optimal operation. Only non-ECC memory is supported.

memory that meets our specifications, otherwise errors could result.
Memory Bank Configuration
The system is provided with four memory slots spread in two banks of two slots each. Each DIMM slot accepts a
256MB, 512 MB or 1 GB 240-pin DIMM module. Locking tabs at both ends of a DIMM slot holds the DIMM in
place. Your Ciara Enterprise/Discovery 945GTP system can have a variety of memory configurations. Your Ciara
Enterprise/Discovery 945GTP system supports dual channel memory technology that speeds up access to memory.
We recommend that you always install memory DIMMs in pairs, each DIMM being installed in the DIMM 0 slot of
each bank, in order to take advantage of the dual channel technology. If you ignore this recommendation, the system
will operate in single channel mode without taking advantage of the dual channel technology. The DIMM 0 slot of
Channel A is the one closest to the processor socket and it is coloured blue. The following figure illustrates the
optimal possibilities:
