With pluggable optical modules, the wavelength and sometimes
whether they are SM or MM is printed on the module itself. If
there is a doubt, look up the part number on the manufacturer’s
website. SM patch cords are usually yellow and MM patch cords
are usually orange for easy identification.
Fiber Inspection and Cleaning
For reliable operation and for consistent test results, it is very
important to have clean and undamaged fiber connectors. Oils,
airborne particles of dust, lint, dirt and other debris, if not
removed, can scratch and damage fiber-optic connectors and
jeopardize the integrity and accuracy of the optical signal. The
ferrule end-faces of fiber-optic patch cords and receptacle con-
nectors are some of the most critical components for fiber-optic
networks. BEFORE inserting any patch cord into the test equip-
ment or any network equipment, clean and inspect both the
patch cord and the bulkhead.
Inspection can be performed with the Digital Lightwave USB
FibreVu Probe. See figure.
This device can be connected to either PC or NIC Platform prod-
uct and can be used to inspect both patch cords (male) fiber con-
nectors or bulkheads (female) with up to 1500x magnification.
