Troubleshootingforaportableaircompressorisanorganizedstudyofaparticularproblem
orseriesofproblemsandaplannedmethodofprocedureforinvestigationandcorrection.
Thetroubleshootingchartthatfollowsincludessomeoftheproblemsthatanoperatormay
encounterduringtheoperationofaportablecompressor.
Thechartdoesnotattempttolistallofthetroublesthatmayoccur,nordoesitattemptto
givealloftheanswersforcorrectionoftheproblems.Thechartdoesgivethoseproblems
thataremostapttooccur.T ousethetroubleshootingchart:

ordertosuggestanordertofollowintroubleshooting.

Studytheproblemthoroughlyandaskyourselfthesequestions:
1.Whatwerethewarningsignalsthatprecededthetrouble?
2.Hasasimilartroubleoccurredbefore?
3.Whatpreviousmaintenanceworkhasbeendone?
4.Ifthecompressorwillstilloperate,isitsafetocontinueoperatingittomakefurther
checks?
DotheSimplestThingsFirst
Mosttroublesaresimpleandeasilycorrected.Forexample,mostcomplaintsare“low
capacity”whichmaybecausedbytoolowanenginespeedor“compressorover-heats”
whichmaybecausedbylowoillevel.
Alwayschecktheeasiestandmostobviousthingsrst;followingthissimplerulewillsave
timeandtrouble.
DoubleCheckBeforeDisassembly
Thesourceofmostcompressortroublescanbetracednottoonecomponentalone,butto
therelationshipofonecomponentwithanother.Toooften,acompressorcanbepartially
disassembledinsearchofthecauseofacertaintroubleandallevidenceisdestroyed
duringdisassembly.Checkagaintobesureaneasysolutiontotheproblemhasnotbeen
overlooked.
FindandCorrectBasicCause
Afteramechanicalfailurehasbeencorrected,besuretolocateandcorrectthecauseof
thetroublesothesamefailurewillnotberepeated.Forexample,acomplaintof“premature
breakdown”maybecorrectedbyrepairinganyimproperwiringconnections,butsomething
causedthedefectivewiring.Thecausemaybeexcessivevibration.
