EXTERIOR SEALANT
An exterior grade sealant may be used
to seal the roof, side panels, front
cap, rear cap, doors and windows,
and any area of the bus exterior
where water penetration could occur.
This sealant prevents water leaks,
reduces vibration and adds noise
dampening to the exterior bus shell.
Exterior sealant is designed to be
durable and flexible while absorbing
vibrations and preventing the joined
areas from rubbing together causing
those surfaces to wear. These seals
form an important part of the bus’s
shell and require maintenance like any
other system because environmental
conditions including UV rays, water, Ice
and seasonal temperature extremes
can effect the sealant’s ability to
maintain adhesion.

Inspect the sealant every 3 months
for damage, cracking, shrinking or
signs of water penetration. Any areas
that show evidence of sealant failure
should be addressed immediately.
Perform repairs where the sealant
appears worn or damaged. First
remove as much of the old sealant
as possible, scraping off the loose
material using care not to damage
the gelcoat. Continue to remove loose
material until you find solid adhesion.
u
Repair the seal using Sikaflex®-505
UV brand sealant, (505 DATA SHEET).
Always follow the manufacturer`s
instructions.
Clean the bus prior to inspection to ensure
good seal visibility.
Advantage also uses 3M 4412 sealant
tape, (4412 DATA SHEET), to seal the
bus’s exterior transitions. The sealant
tape also needs to be maintained.
Inspect the front cap and the rear cap.
The top of the transition has seam
tape, at the crown of the roof peak
H-mold. If a roof hatch is installed,
check the 3M sealant tape around the
