8.4 Steered trailing axle (optional)
On tandem assemblies, the steered trailing axle is always the second axle; on tridem assemblies, it is
the first and last axle.
Adjusting the steering axle
If the trailer is equipped with steering axles, the setting of the
axles must be checked in new condition and after fitting new
tyres.
- Couple and fully load the trailer.
Drive round a tight corner with the towing vehicle and
stop the tractor/trailer combination while in the corner.
- Measure the distance between the tyres and frame.
With a fully laden trailer, the distance between the tyres and frame must be at least 10 mm. The
measurement must be performed on both sides of the trailer for all steering axles.
If the distance is too low, the setting must be adjusted as follows:
- Travel a short distance in a straight line so that the tractor/trailer combination is straight.
- Undo the lock nut of the adjusting screw on the side to be adjusted.
- Adjust the adjusting screw.
Turn anti-clockwise to increase the distance between the tyres and frame.
Turn clockwise to reduce the distance between the tyres and frame.
Drive another tight corner with the tractor/trailer combination and repeat the measurement.
The steering axle must only be adjusted by authorised specialist workshops.
If the steering axles are set incorrectly, there is a risk of the tyres being damaged
when travelling around tight corners.
If the trailer is equipped with a tridem axle assembly, the measurement and
adjustment must also be performed on the front axle.
The steering axle must be locked at speeds over 15 km/h and when reversing.
