STARTER
A combined starter/generator is mounted in the
center on the front of the accessory gearbox.
When the start sequence is activated for a nor-
mal start, the DEEC will energize the start
relay (line contactor) closed, connecting elec-
trical power to the starter from the corre-
sponding generator bus. The power source to
the generator busses can be from aircraft bat-
teries, a ground power unit, or an APU (if in-
stalled). It is recommended that a GPU or
APU be used for start, particularly in cold
weather; however, a battery start may be made
if necessary at temperatures above 0 degrees
Celsius.
The L/R START switches are guarded with
hinged, clear plastic covers. The switches are
located on the left and right side, respectively,
on the engine/fuel control panel, on the center
pedestal (Figure 7-17). The start switch is a
momentary action switch with a white “ON” an-
nunciator that illuminates when the switch is de-
pressed, indicating the start relay is energized.
A “START” annunciator will also appear on
the EICAS (Figure 7-18) when the starter is
engaged. For each engine, “START” will ap-
pear vertically outboard of the N2, oil and
fuel flow digital displays. The START an-
nunciator will be green in color, but will turn
to amber if the starter relay is still energized
closed above 51% N2.
For a normal computer-on start, the DEEC
provides for automatic starting which allows
the power lever to be moved into the IDLE po-
sition before activating the starter. When the
start switch is momentarily depressed, the
