WARNING Risk of skidding and of an
accident duetoshifting down on slippery
road surfaces
If youshiftdownonslipperyroad surfaces to
increase theengine braking effect, thedrive
wheels maylose traction.
#
Do notshiftdownonslipperyroad sur‐
faces to increase theengine braking
effect.
Vehicles withautomatic transmissions mayroll in
neutralposition i foronly ashorttime. Allowing
thewheels to roll forlonger,e.g. when towing,
causes transmission damage.
If thevehicle threatens to skid, or cannotbestop‐
ped when traveling at alow speed, youcan stabi‐
lize thevehicle using thefollowing measures:
R
Shiftthe automatic transmission to neutral
position i.
R
Trytomaintain control of thevehicle using
correctivesteering.
Driveparticularly carefullyonslipperyroads.
Avoid sudden acceleration, steering and braking
maneuvers.
Have your vehicle winterized at aqualified spe‐
cialistworkshop in good time at theonsetofwin‐
ter.
Observe thenotes on snowchains
(/ page213).
Regularly checkthe vehicle and remove snowor
ice when traveling in wintryconditions.
An accumulation of snowand ice, particularly
when frozen, in theareaaround theair intake,
moving parts, theaxles and thewheel housing,
maycause thefollowing problems:
R
Obstruction of theair intake
R
Damagetovehicle parts
R
Malfunctionsdue to restriction of mobility
intendedbythe design (e.g. reduced steering
movement)
If thereisany damage, informaqualified special‐
istworkshop.
Information about driving off-road
&
WARNING Risk of accident if youdonot
keep to line of fall on inclines
If youdrive at an angle or turnonanincline,
thevehicle could slip sideways, tip and roll‐
over.
#
Alwaysdrive on inclines in theline of fall
(straight up or down) and do notturn.
&
WARNING Risk of injury due to acceler‐
atingforce during off-road driving
When driving off-road on unevensurfaces,
theforce of thevehicle's acceleration affects
your body from all directions.
Youcould, forexample, be thrown from your
seat.
#
Alwayswear aseat belt when driving
off-road.
&
WARNING Risk of injury to thehands
when driving overobstacles
If youdrive over obstacles or in tireruts, the
steering wheel mayfold backand cause inju‐
ries to thehands.
#
Steering wheel mustalwaysbeheld
securely withbothhands.
#
When driving overobstacles, expect
increased steering forces at short
notice.
&
WARNING Risk of fire due to flammable
materials on hotparts of theexhaust sys‐
tem
Flammable materialsuchasleaves, grass or
twigs mayigniteiftheycome intocontact
with hotparts of theexhaust system.
