Event Data Recorders
USAonly:
This vehicle is equipped withanevent data
recorder (EDR).The mainpurpose of an EDRisto
record, in certain crash or near crash-likesitua‐
tions, suchasanair bag deployment or hitting a
road obstacle, data that will assistinunderstand‐
ing howavehicle's systems performed. The EDR
is designed to recorddatarelated to vehicle
dynamics and safetysystems forashortperiod
of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to recordsuch
data as:
R
Howvarious systems in your vehicle were
operating;
R
Whether or notthe driver and passenger
safetybeltswerebuckled/fastened;
R
Howfar (if at all) thedriverwas depressing
theaccelerator and/or brakepedal; and,
R
Howfastthe vehicle wastraveling.
This datacan help provide abetterunderstanding
of thecircumstances in whichcrashes and inju‐
ries occur.NOTE: EDRdataare recorded by your
vehicle onlyifanon-trivial crash situation occurs;
no dataare recorded by theEDR under normal
driving conditions and no personal data(e.g.
name, gender, ageand crash location) arerecor‐
ded. However, other parties suchaslaw enforce‐
ment could combine theEDR datawiththe type
of personally identifying dataroutinelyacquired
during acrash investigation.
Access to thevehicle and/or theEDR is needed
to read datathat is recorded by an EDR, and spe‐
cial equipmentisrequired. In addition to thevehi‐
cle manufacturer,other parties that have thespe‐
cial equipment, suchaslaw enforcement, can
read theinformation by accessingthe vehicle or
theEDR.
EDRdatamay be used in civil and criminal mat‐
ters as atool in accident reconstruction, accident
claims and vehicle safety. Since theCrash Data
RetrievalCDR tool that is used to extract data
from theEDR is commerciallyavailable, Daimler
Vans USA, LLC("DVUSA") expresslydisclaims
anyand all liability arising from theextraction of
this informationbyunauthorizedFreightliner
Sprinter personnel.
DVUSAwill notshareEDR datawithotherswith‐
out theconsent of thevehicle ownersor, if the
vehicle is leased, without theconsent of theles‐
see. Exceptions to this representation include
responses to subpoenas by lawenforcement;by
federal, stateorlocal government;inconnection
withorarising out of litigation involvingDVUSAor
its subsidiaries and affiliates; or,asrequired by
law.
Warning: The EDRisacomponentofthe
Restraint System Module. Tampering with, alter‐
ing, modifying or removing theEDR component
mayresult in amalfunction of theRestraint Sys‐
temModule and other systems.
Statelaws or regulations regarding EDRs that
conflict withfederal regulation arepre-empted.
This means that in theevent of such conflict, the
federal regulation governs. As of December 2016,
17 states have enacted laws relatingtoEDRs.
