Information on M+S tires
At temperatures below5F(10 °C) use winter
tires or all-season tires –bothare markedwith
M+S.
Onlywinter tires bearing the i snowflake
symbol in addition to theM+S marking provide
thebestpossible grip in wintryroad conditions.
Only these tires will allowdriving safetysystems
suchasABS and ESP
®
to also function optimally
in winter.Thesetires have been developed specif‐
icallyfor driving in snow.
Use M+S tires of thesame makeand tread on all
wheels to maintain safehandling characteristics.
Alwaysobserve themaximum permissible speed
specified forthe M+S tires youhave installed
(/ page225).
If youinstall M+S tires that have alower maxi‐
mum permissible speedthan themaximum
design speed of thevehicle, affixanappropriate
warning sign in thedriver's field of vision. You
can obtainthis at aqualified specialistworkshop.
Once youhave installed thewinter tires, take the
following measures:

rect installation of snowchains
Vehicles with rear-wheel drive: if youhave
installed snowchains to thefront wheels,
they maydragagainstthe vehicle body or
chassis components.
This could cause damagetothe vehicle or the
tires.

Neverinstall snowchains on thefront
wheels.
#
Onlyinstall snowchains on therear
wheelsinpairs.
#
Vehicles with twin tires: install the
snowchains to theouter wheels.

WARNING Risk of accident dueto
unsuitable snow chains
Vehicles withall-wheel drivedonot have suf‐
ficient clearance on thefront axle forcom‐
mercially available snow chains.
When youinstall commerciallyavailable snow
chains,the snowchains maycomeloose and
damagechassiscomponentsorbrake hoses.

Only install snowchains approvedby
Freightliner Sprinter forthese tires.
Forsafetyreasons, Freightliner Sprinter recom‐
mends that youonlyuse snow chains that have
been checkedand approved. Youcan obtain
information about snow chains from anyqualified
specialistworkshop.

NOTE Damage to thewheel trim from
mounted snowchains
If snowchains are mounted to steel wheels,
thewheel trims can be damaged.

Remove thewheel trims of steel wheels
beforemounting snowchains.
Observe thefollowing noteswhen using snow
chains:

Snow chains areonlypermissible forcertain
wheel/tirecombinations.You can obtain
information on them at aqualified specialist
workshop.
R
Forsafetyreasons, onlyuse snow chains that
have been specifically approvedfor your vehi‐
cle by Freightliner Sprinter,orsnowchains
withthe same quality standard.
R
The snow chains mustberetightenedafter
driving approximately 0.6 miles (1 km). This is
theonlyway to ensurethe snowchains are
optimally seated withclearancetoadjacent
components.
R
Vehicles with all-wheel drive: install snow
chains to thewheels on therear axle. On
vehicles withtwin tires, install thesnow
chains to theouter wheels. Observe theman‐
ufacturer's installation instructions.
