In wintrydriving conditions, alwaysuse winter
tires (M+S tires) and, if necessary, snowchains
(/ page213). Only in this waycan themaximum
effect of all-wheeldrive be achieved.
Use DSR(Downhill Speed Regulation) when driv‐
ing downhill off-road (/ page123).
If youfail to adaptyour driving styleorifyou are
inattentive,the all-wheel drivesystem can neither
reduce therisk of an accident nor override the
laws of physics. The all-wheel drivesystemcan‐
nottakeroad, weather and trafficconditions into
account. The all-wheeldrive system is onlyan
aid. Youare responsible formaintaining asafe
distance from thevehicle in front, forvehicle
speed, forbraking in good time and forstaying in
lane.

Engaging all-wheel drive
Conditions forengaging/disengaging
Youcan engageand deactivatethe all-wheel drive
when stationaryorwhile drivingslowly.
When stationary, thefollowing mustbeobserved:

The engineisrunning.

Thesteering wheel in thestraight-aheadposi‐
tion.
If theall-wheel drivecannot be engaged when
stationary:

Vehicles with automatic transmission:
shiftthe selector leverfrom i to h from
h to i from i to k and backtoi.
Engaging and disengaging theall-wheel drive
can be made easier in this way.
Observe thefollowing when driving slowly:

The engine is running.
R
The vehicle is nottraveling faster than
6.2mph (10km/h).
R
The vehicle is notbeing driven around abend.
If it is notpossible to engageall-wheel drivewhen
thevehicle is rolling:
