brakeand theyellow ! indicator lamplights
up.
In this case, parkthe vehicle in thefollowing way:

Park thevehicle on levelgroundand secureit
to prevent it from rolling away.

Vehicles with automatic transmission:
shiftthe transmission to position j.

The electric parking brakeisonlyactually

It maynot be possible to release aparkingbrake
if theon-boardelectrical system voltageislow or
if thereisamalfunction in thesystem. Informa

When theengine is switched off, theelectric
parking brakecarries out afunction test at regu‐
lar intervals. Noisesare normal in this process.
Automaticallyapplying the electric parking
brake
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
The electric parking brakeisautomatically
applied when thetransmission is in position j.
In addition, at leastone of thefollowing condi‐
tions mustbefulfilled:

The engineisswitched off
R
The driver is notsitting in thedriver's seat
R
The belt buckle is undone
To prevent theelectric parking brakefromapply‐
ing automatically, pull switch 1.
The electric parking brakeisalso automatically
applied if ActiveDistance Assist DISTRONIChas
brought thevehicle to astandstill.
In addition,atleastone of thefollowing condi‐
tions mustbefulfilled:

The engineisswitched off
R
The driver is notsitting in thedriver's seat
R
The belt buckle is undone
R
Thereisasystemmalfunction

The powersupply is insufficient
R
The vehicle is stationaryfor along time
The red F and ! indicator lamps in the
instrument displaylight up. The electricparking
brakeisonlyactually applied when thered F
and ! indicator lamps light up continuously.
Releasing theelectric parking brakeautomat‐
ically
Vehicles with automatic transmission:
The electric parking brakeofyour vehicle is
released when all of thefollowing conditionsare
fulfilled:

The driver is sitting in thedriver's seat.
R
The driver is belted.
R
The engine is running.
R
The transmissionisinposition h or k and
youdepress theaccelerator.
or
Youswitch from transmission position j to
position h or k.You mustalso depress the
accelerator if traveling on steep uphill gradi‐
ents.

If thetransmission is in position k,the rear-
end doorsmustbeclosed.
