Steps to determining thecorrect criticalload
The following steps have been developed as
required of all manufacturersunder Title 49,
Code of U.S. Federal Regulations, Part 575in
accordance withthe "National Trafficand Motor
Vehicle SafetyAct of 1966".
#
Step1:locate thestatement, "The combined
weight of occupantsand cargo should never
exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs." on theTireand
Loading Informationplacardofyour vehicle.

Step2:determine thecombined weight of
thedriverand passengersthat will be travel‐
ing in your vehicle.
#
Step3:subtract thecombined weight of the
driver and passengersfromXXX kg or
XXX lbs.
#
Step4:theresulting figureequals theper‐
missible amount of cargo and luggageload
capacity.For example, if the"XXX" amount
equals 1,400 lbs and therewill be five 150lb
passengersinyour vehicle, theamount of
available cargo and luggageload capacity is
650lbs (1,400–750 (5 x150) =650 lbs).

Step5:determine thecombined weight of
luggageand cargo being loaded on thevehi‐
cle. Forsafetyreasons, this weight mustnot
exceed thecargo and luggageload capacity
calculated in step 4.

Step6:
Even if youhavecalculated thetotal load care‐
fully, youshouldstillmakesurethat themaxi‐
mum permissible gross weight and themaximum
gross axle weight rating of your vehicle arenot
exceeded. Information forthis can be found on
thevehicle identification plate.

Weigh theladen vehicle, including driver,pas‐
sengersand load, on asuitable vehicle weigh‐
bridge.
The measured values mustnot exceed the
maximumpermitted values listedonthe vehi‐
cle identification plate.

The following table has examples of howtocalcu‐
late total and cargo load capacitieswithvarying
seatingconfigurations and different numbersand
sizesofoccupants. The following examples use a
maximum load of 1,500 lbs (680 kg). This value
is forillustrativepurposes only. Makesureyou
areusingthe actual load limit foryour vehicle
stated on your vehicle's Tire and LoadingInfor‐
mation placard(/page221).
The higherthe weight of all theoccupants, the
smaller themaximum load forluggage.
