3. Move the ESU ground pad as close to the surgical site as possible.
4. The sensor may be damp or may need to be replaced with a new sensor.
5. Apply an adhesive single-patient use sensor as these sensors have added
protection against electrosurgical interference.
PROBLEM: The oxygen saturation measurement does not correlate with the
value calculated from a blood gas determination.
CAUSE:
 The SpO
2
calculation may not have correctly adjusted for the effects of
pH, temperature, pCO
2
, fetal hemoglobin, or 2, 3-DPG.
 Accuracy can be affected by incorrect sensor application or use,
intravascular dyes, bright light, excessive patient movement, venous
pulsations, electrosurgical interference, excessive ambient light,
presence of nail polish, dye or pigmented cream, and placement of a
sensor on an extremity that has a blood pressure cuff, arterial catheter,
or intravascular line.
SOLUTION:
 Check that calculations have been corrected appropriately for the
relevant variable. In general, calculated saturation values are not as
reliable as direct laboratory hemoximeter measurements.
 If there is excessive light, cover the sensor with opaque material. On
adult or on pediatric patients consider the use of a MAX-A or MAX-P
sensor which have an opaque shield to block more ambient light.
 Circulation distal to the sensor site should be checked routinely. The site
must be inspected every 2 hours (or per NELLCOR
®
sensor’s directions
for use) to ensure adhesion, skin integrity, and correct optical
alignment. If skin integrity changes, move the sensor to another site.
 Try to keep the patient still, or change the sensor site to one with less
motion.
 Observe all instructions, warnings, and cautions in this manual and in
the directions for use of the sensor.
PROBLEM: The SpO
2
signal has disappeared but the value persists, and an alarm
does not occur immediately.
CAUSE:
 The algorithm provides for the SpO
2
value to be maintained for 10
seconds after the signal has disappeared before an alarm is generated.
 Probe may have become dislodged.
SOLUTION:
 Check the patient.
 If possible, keep the patient still; check whether the sensor is applied
securely and properly and replace it if necessary; move the sensor to a
new site; use a sensor that tolerates more motion.
