7.1.1 Setting Speed with HVAD
®
Pump
The pump speed for each patient should be individualized based on body surface area and
clinical condition.
Speed should be maintained at a minimum level to: attain satisfactory hemodynamics (MAP
2
, end organ perfusion) and optimal decompression of
the heart without leftward shift of the intraventricular septum or suction.
Echocardiography can be helpful when setting speed. It can provide detailed information
positioning.
One of the operating goals for the HVAD
®
®
waveform on the HeartWare
®
(see
gure below). Pulsatility is affected by a number of patient conditions including left ventricular
contractility, right heart function and left ventricular afterload.

NOTE: Recommended HVAD

Pump speeds are between 2400 RPM and 3200 RPM. HVAD

Pump speeds
outside this range may result in less than optimal HVAD
