Inspect the drive shaft coupling and the
output shat Y-1. Look for pitting, galling or
wear.
Inspect the O-ring, if damaged replace.
Inspect the bearings for pitting or damage.
Measure gear lash of the output shaft Y-1
Install it temporarily into the gearcase,
wrap a rag (1) around a screwdriver (2)
and the insert it into the installation hole
(3) of the right crankcase speed sensor to
hold the middle driven gear.
Attach the gear lash measurement tool (4)
and a dial gauge (5). Measure the gear
lash while rotating the output shaft Y-1
back and forth. Gear Lash 6.7 mm (0.26
in)
Measure the gear lash at 4 positions.
Rotate the middle driven gear 90⁰ each
time.
Install the bearing retainer (1) by placing a
rag (2) in a vise and securing the bearing
housing. Attach the bearing retainer
wrench (3) and tighten.
Caution:
The middle driven shaft bearing
retainer has left-handed threads. To
tighten the retainer, turn it
counterclockwise .
Install the shim (1), universal joint yoke,
washer and nut (1).
Note:
Use the universal joint holder (2)
to hold the
yoke.
Install the opposite yoke into the universal joint,
apply wheel bearing grease to the bearings, and
install the bearing (1) onto the yoke.
