Disassembling the universal joint
Remove the circlips (1) by placing the
universal joint into a press. With a suitable
diameter pipe (2) beneath the yoke(3)
press the bearing (4) into the pipe.
Repeat the process for the opposite
bearing then remove the yoke.
Inspection of the Cv Axle, Front axle
Inspect the rubber Dust boots. Look for
cracks or damage.
Inspect the double offset assembly, the
ball joint splines and the shaft splines for
wear or damage.
Inspect the Balls and ball races for pitting,
wear or damage.
Inspect the inner surface of the double
offset for pitting, wear or damage.
Inspect the movement of the inner and
outer ball cages on the left and right
transmission shafts. Movement should be
smooth.
Do not use gasoline or petroleum products
to clean the dust boots as tis will damage
them. When reassembling the ball cages
will need to be filled approximately 2/3 with
lithium grease.
Assembling the universal joint
Install the universal joint into the yoke.
Apply wheel bearing grease to the
bearings. Install the bearing(1) onto the
yoke and press into place using a suitable
socket.
Caution:
Check each bearing. The needles can
easily fall out of their races. Slide the
yoke back and forth on the bearings;
the yoke will not go all the way onto a
bearing if a needle is out of place.
Note:
The bearing must be inserted far
enough into the universal joint so that
the circlip can be installed.
