CHECKING THE IGNITION TIMING
Note :
Engine idle speed and throttle cable free play
should be adjusted properly before checking the
ignition timing.
1. Remove:
·driver seat
·passenger seat
·console
Refer to “SEATS” in chapter 5.
2. Lift the cargo bed up.
3. Attach:
·tachometer
·timing light
(to the spark plug lead)
4. Remove:
Remove the cooling fan according to the reference
of adjusting valve clearance.
5. Check:
·ignition timing
a. Warm up the engine and keep it at the specified
speed
Engine speed
1,400 ~ 1,500 r/min
b. Remove the timing plug

c. Visually check the stationary pointer ① to verify it
is within the required firing range②indicated on the
flywheel.
Incorrect firing range → Check the pulser coil
assembly.
d. Install the timing plug.
6. Install:
·Engine cooling fan
7 Nm (0.7 m · kg, 5.1 ft · lb)
7. Install:
① Air shroud
10 Nm (1.0 m · kg, 7.2 ft · lb)
8. Detach:
·timing light
·tachometer
