Section 7 System Recharge and Reset
7 SYSTEM RECHARGE AND RESET

7.1 Cleanup Following Discharge
Dry chemical, when discharged, will drift from the immediate discharge area and settle on surrounding
surfaces. Prompt cleanup will minimize possible staining or corrosion of certain material that can take place
in the presence of moisture.
Monoammonium phosphate and potassium chloride are slightly acidic and, in the presence of moisture, can
corrode metals such as steel, cast iron, and aluminum.
Potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and urea-based potassium bicarbonate are slightly basic and,
in the presence of moisture can corrode metals such as aluminum, aluminum brass, aluminum bronze, and
titanium.
Such corrosion will vary from a dull or tarnished finish to mild surface corrosion. Corrosion should not be of
concern when accompanied by prompt cleanup. For the most part, these dry chemical agents can be readily
cleaned up by wiping, vacuuming, or washing the exposed materials. A monoammonium phosphate-based
agent will need some scraping and washing if the exposed surfaces were hot when the agent was applied.
Upon exposure to temperatures in excess of 250°F (121°C) or relative humidity in excess of 50%, deposits
will be formed that can be corrosive, conductive, and difficult to remove.
7.2 Piping and Nozzles
High heat from a fire could damage piping and nozzles, and possibly pipe support members. Check all pipe
supports and fittings for any signs of damage or corrosion.
Purge the discharge piping by disconnecting all cylinders and removing any manifold check valves, then
blowing pressurized dry nitrogen or compressed air through discharge piping until no dry chemical residue
is visible escaping at any nozzle.
Remove nozzles from pipe and inspect for damage, corrosion, or obstructions. Clean and inspect nozzles
and nozzles blow-off caps. Replace blow-off caps if lost or damaged. Wipe inside of skirt of nozzle blow-off
cap with a light coating of silicone grease. Reinstall caps onto nozzles and reinstall nozzles making certain
to tighten and aim properly.
7.2.1 Pneumatic Actuation Piping
If the system has been actuated using the remote nitrogen actuation cylinder, the actuation piping shall be
checked for any signs of damage and the nitrogen cylinder shall be refilled as described in Section 7.4.
