MV & LV SERIES ENGINEERED DRY CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM
OPERATION, DESIGN, & SERVICE MANUAL
REV C
Document # DOC324
Issued: April 26, 2018
Revised: March 22, 2022
UL FILE # EX27541
A cylinder containing pressurized dry chemical agent must be handled carefully. All anti-recoil safety plugs
and devices must be in place at all times when the cylinder is not connected to discharge piping.
The discharge of large amounts of dry chemical can create hazards to personnel such as reduced visibility and
temporarybreathingdi󰀩culties.
1.2 Extinguishing Agent
ABC (monoammonium phosphate-based) is suitable for use with all A”, “B”, and “C” Class hazards. Dry
Chemical Type extinguishing systems are inappropriate for the protection of Class D hazards. As per
NFPA 17, dry chemical systems are not approved for deep-seated or burrowing fires (such as ordinary
combustibles, where the agent cannot reach the point of combustion), or on chemicals that contain their
own oxygen supply (such as cellulose nitrate). Do not mix different types of agents, or agents from different
manufacturers. Chemical reactions may occur when incompatible chemicals are mixed. Keep in mind that
the agent used for each system must be acceptable to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Janus Fire Systems® Engineered Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishing Systems store ABC dry chemical agent
in steel cylinders. e dry chemical agent is then pressurized with nitrogen to 500 psig (34.48 bar) at 70°F
(21.1°C).
1.3 Safety Considerations
e Safety Data Sheet (SDS) on ABC Dry Chemical agent can be found in Appendix A of this manual
and should be read and understood before working with the agent. Training of personnel, fire drills, and
evacuation plans should be considered.
