MV & LV SERIES ENGINEERED DRY CHEMICAL FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM
OPERATION, DESIGN, & SERVICE MANUAL
REV C
Document # DOC324
Issued: April 26, 2018
Revised: March 22, 2022
UL FILE # EX27541
Section 3 System Design
e sidewall nozzle can cover a maximum area of 15 ft x
15 ft (4.57 m x 4.57 m). A single sidewall nozzle may be
used to protect room with an area of 225 ft² (20.9 m²) or
less provided the nozzle is not more than 16.77 ft (5.11 m)
from the farthest point it is intended to protect. Refer to
Table 3.2.3.1a in Appendix D for alternate spacing options.
e centerline of a sidewall nozzle must be located within
6 in (152 mm) of the adjacent wall (or within 14 in [356
mm] of the reverse-facing nozzle in a back-to-back nozzle
orientation). When using multiple sidewall nozzles, the
maximum distance between nozzles cannot exceed 15 ft
(4.57 m) and the maximum distance from the side of the
coverage area cannot exceed half the distance between
nozzles [7 ft 6 in (2.29 m)]. e nozzle must be oriented
so that it is directed at the opposite wall. For back-to-back
nozzle orientation limits refer to Table 3.2.3.1c and Figure
3.2.3.1c in Appendix D.
e 360° radial nozzle can cover a maximum area of 15 ft
x 15 ft (4.57 m x 4.57 m). e centerline of a 360° nozzle
cannot be more than 10.605 ft (3.23 m) from the farthest
point it is intended to protect. When using multiple radial
nozzles, the maximum distance between nozzles cannot
exceed 15 ft (4.57 m) and the maximum distance from the
side of the coverage areas cannot exceed half the distance
between nozzles [7.5 ft (2.29 m)]. Refer to Table 3.2.3.1b
in Appendix D for alternate spacing options. NOTE: Two
180° sidewall nozzles may be used back-to-back as an
alternative to a radial nozzle to increase the area of coverage
at a single point, provide additional flexibility in piping
design, and provide improved flow performance.

¹ A minimum 50 pounds of dry chemical was discharged at a flow rate of 5.26 lbs/sec during UL witnessed fire testing
of the Engineered Orifice Total Flood Discharge Nozzles.
3.2.3.2 Temperature Limitations
e operating temperature range for the system components used in Engineered Orifice Total Flood
applications is -40°F to 120°F (-40°C to 49°C).
3.2.3.3 Agent Application
A minimum of 55 lbs (24.9 kg) is required to be discharged from each sidewall and radial nozzle at a
minimum discharge flow rate of 5.26 lbs/sec (2.39 kg/sec).¹
e Janus Design Suite® Flow Calculation Software will determine the amount of dry chemical agent
required to meet these flow rates based on the hazard dimensions and number of nozzles required, as well
as the drill orifices.
