16. Frequently Asked Questions
This section covers answers to frequently asked questions.
1. Can USB-Type C power supply and cable be used to power the Aries tablets?
No, the USB Type-C power supply is used for recharging the battery in the Aries tablet when it is removed
from its plate, and it is used for recharging the battery in the Aries handle.
2. Will USB Type-C power supply recharge both the Aries tablet and the Aries handle
when the handle is attached to the tablet?
No, there is no pass through charging from the tablet to the handle. In this use case, only the tablet
battery will be recharged.
3. How do I recharge the battery in the Aries handle?
Via a USB Type-C power supply that is physically connected to the handle’s USB Type-C port, shown in
section titled “Charging Handle” on page 33, that is exposed when the handle is not attached to the
tablet.
4. When the Aries Pro tablet is connected to a handle, how is the tablet being powered?
The battery in the Aries tablet powers the terminal until it is depleted and then the battery in the Aries
handle powers the device.
5. Can the Aries handle be changed while the tablet is running?
Yes, although this is not recommended. Best practice is to power the tablet off before removing or
replacing the handle. Additionally, if the tablet battery level is low, removing the tablet could cause the
terminal to power off.
6. What is the purpose of the USB Type-C port on the Aries tablets?
The USB Type-C port is used for side loading the terminal (not recommended), and can be used for local
key injection, for debugging problems, and for recharging the battery in the Aries Pro tablets when they
are removed from the Plate or Base Station.
7. Why are data cables not included in any Aries kit or ala carte part number?
In certain use cases a data cable is not needed (WiFi used instead). For those use cases that mandate a
physical wired connection to a POS device, there are three different types of cable cables to choose from,
as follows:
PoweredUSB Cable – where power and data is provided from a suitably equipped Powered USB
POS terminal
Aries USB Cable – which requires an Aries power supply that can interface either to the Aries
Plate or to the power pig-tail connector on the cable.
Px RS232 Cable – which requires an Aries power supply that can only interface directly into the
Aries Base Station.
8. There are two different privacy shields included in each Aries tablet or kit box, which
one should I use?
The Aries terminals have achieved PCI certification without requiring a physical privacy shield. Two
privacy shields are included (lower and higher profile) for use by merchants who want to provide
additional protection against PIN number theft.
