What is the difference between cleaning and
disinfecting?
Cleaning is the removal of dirt from the meter or
lancing device.
Disinfecting is the removal of most, but not all,
disease-causing and other types of microorgan-
isms (bloodborne pathogens) from the meter or
lancing device.
When to clean and disinfect the meter and
the lancing device
• Clean and disinfect the meter and/or the
lancing device to remo
ve visible dirt or other
material on a regular basis.
• Clean and disinfect the meter and/or the
lancing device alw
ays when there is blood on
it.
• Clean and disinfect the meter and/or the
lancing device before allowing any
one else to
handle the meter and/or the lancing device,
for instance, if you have someone assisting
you. Do not allow anyone else to use the lanc-
ing device.
