3.4.1 Checks and Preparation
Check that you have all the required parts:
o A MOC assembly including pre-fitted DIC prism holder and cover / light shield.
o A MOC-compatible bracket
o The Optical block with two detectors fitted
o Two M5 X 30 Hex cap-head bolts and one M4 X 25 hex cap-head bolt.
In addition you will need a long 4mm ball-headed hex driver for the M5 bolts and normal hex drivers for
both M4 and M3 cap-head bolts.
If you wish to use DIC illumination, you will in addition require the appropriate above-objective prism.
Ensure that the cables coming from the detector modules are NOT plugged into the controller. There
must be no power applied to the detectors during this operation.
Remove any objective lenses from the MOC to prevent damage to both the lenses and the MOC during
handling and fitting. Objectives should only be fitted when the whole assembly is in place on the
SliceScope.
3.4.2 Fitting a DIC Prism
Skip this section if you are not intending to use DIC; you can fit the assembled detection module / MOC
combination directly to the SliceScope.
The process comprises these steps:
Removing the rear PMT module (two M3 bolts)
Removing the detection module and mounting bracket (one M4 bolt, three M5 bolts)
Removing the DIC prism cover (four M3 bolts)
Reassembly in the reverse order
3.4.3 Removing the rear PMT module
Switch off the controller unit and disconnect both power / control cables from the 8-way mini-DIN
sockets on the rear panel. Disconnect the signal cables as well. Never attempt to remove a detector
module when it is connected to the controller or to the data acquisition system.
Refer to the appendix for the procedure used to remove a PMT module.
Put the temporarily-removed PMT module aside with the lens facing uppermost and covered by a clean
and dust-free tissue or a plastic bag. Be careful not to lose the O-ring from the front of the PMT
module this is part of the light seal.
