APPENDIX B - CENTRIFUGAL PUMP TROUBLESHOOTING
The following table provides possible solutions for symptoms that you may encounter
with your centrifugal pump.
WARNING!
Before attempting to service the pump:
1. Follow the shut down procedures.
2. Lock out the power source.
3. Allow the pump to cool.
4. Close the suction and discharge
valves.
5. Drain the pump.

CENTRIFUGAL PUMP TROUBLESHOOTING
Symptom Cause Solution
Pump not primed. Re-prime pump.
Suction lift too high. Install shorter suction pipe.
Wrong direction of
rotation.
Change motor wiring.
Impeller clogged. Back-flush pump.
Pump not
delivering liquid
Suction line plugged. Remove debris.
Air leak in stuffing box. Replace or adjust packing.
Worn suction side plate. Replace defective part.
Impeller worn or
damaged.
Inspect and replace impeller, if
needed.
Air leak in suction line. Replace gasket.
Impeller clogged. Back-flush pump.
Low flow and low
head
Wrong direction of
rotation.
Change motor wiring.
