SECTION 4
MAINTENANCE
434
Change inform ation, i f any, affecting this section w it! be fou nd at the rear o f the manual.
Introduction
This section of the manual contains maintenance in fo r
mation fo r use in preventive maintenance, corrective
maintenance or troubleshooting of the 434.
Cabinet Removal
Dangerous potentials exist a t several poin ts through
o u t this instrum ent. When the instrum ent is operated
w ith the covers removed, do n o t touch exposed
connections or components. Some transistors m ay
have elevated cases. Disconnect pow er before cleaning
the instrum ent o r replacing parts.
The cabinet can be removed from the oscilloscope as
follows:
1. Unwrap the power cord from the instrument feet.
2. Loosen the phillips-head screw located in each instru
ment fo o t. See Fig. 4-1,
3. Remove the rear ring assembly from the rear o f the
instrum ent.
4. Slide the cabinet to the rear and remove the oscillo
scope.
The R432 can be removed from its cabinet in a similar
manner. T o replace the instrum ent in its wrap-around
cabinet, reverse the removal procedure. The portable w rap
around cabinet should be installed w ith the carrying handle
p iv o t po ints positioned toward the bottom of the
instrum ent.
PREVENTIVE M AINTENANC E
Genera!
Preventive maintenance consists of cleaning, visual
in s p e c tio n , lu b ric a tio n , etc. Preventive maintenance

perform ed on a regular basis may prevent instrum ent break
down and w ill improve the re liab ility of this instrum ent.
The severity o f the environment to w hich the 434 is
subjected determines the frequency of maintenance. A
convenient time to perform preventive maintenance is
preceding recalibration of the instrument.
Cleaning
General. The 434 should be cleaned as often as opera
ting conditions require. Accum ulation of d irt in the instru
ment can cause overheating and com ponent breakdown.
D irt on components acts as an insulating blanket and
prevents efficient heat dissipation. It also provides an elec
trical conduction path w hich may result in instrum ent
failure.
The cabinet provides protection against dust in the
interior o f the instrum ent. Operation w ith o ut the cabinet in
place necessitates more frequent cleaning. The fro n t cover
provides dust protection fo r the fro n t panel and the CRT
face. The fro n t cover should be installed fo r storage or
transportation.
