Thisisduetohardernativesoilthatsticksinthe
endofthetine.Side-ejectgreens/teestinesfrom
themanufacturerstaycleanerandreducethetime
requiredtocleanthetinesout.Youwilleventually
eliminatethisconditionwithcontinuedaeration
andtop-dressingprograms.
HardGround
Ifthegroundistoormtoobtainthedesiredcoring
depth,thecoringheadcangetintoabouncingrhythm.
Thisisduetothehardpanthetinesareattemptingto
penetrate.Correctthisconditionbyattemptingthe
following:
•Donotaerateifgroundistoohardordry.You
obtainbestaerationresultsafterarainorwatering
theturfthepreviousday.
•Changetoa3-tinehead,ifattemptingtousethe
4-tineheadorreducethenumberoftinesper
stomperarm.Attempttomaintainasymmetrical
tinecongurationtoevenlyloadthestomperarms.
•Ifgroundishardpacked,reduceaerator
penetration(depthsetting),cleanupthecores,
watertheturf,andre-aerateatadeeper
penetration.
Aerationofsoiltypesbuiltontopofhardsubsoils(i.e.,
soil/sandplacedoverrockysoil)cancauseundesired
holequality.Thisoccurswhentheaerationdepthis
greaterthanthebuiltupsoilandthesubsoilistoo
hardtopenetrate.Whenthetinescontactthisharder
subsoil,theaeratormayliftandcausethetopofthe
holestobecomeelongated.Reducetheaerating
depthsufcientlytoavoidpenetrationintothehard
subsoil.
EntranceHoleQuality
Theentranceholequalityisdeterioratingwhenthe
holeisslotted(pulledforward).
Iftheholeentrancequalityisdeteriorating,checkthe
tineground-heightcalibration,refertoCheckingthe
TineGround-HeightCalibration(page51).
MiniTine(QuadTine)
Becauseofthedoublerowdesign,themini-tinecoring
headrequirestheholespacingtobesetat6.3cm
(2-1/2inches).Groundspeediscriticaltomaintain
theappearanceof3.2cm(1-1/4inches)holespacing.
RefertoSettingtheHoleSpacing(page33)ifyour
holespacingrequiresasmallchange.
Withtheminitineheadorlargersolidtineuse,theturf
rootstructureisimportanttopreventingturfdamage
duetotearingoftherootzone.Ifthecenter2arms
begintolifttheturfordamagetotherootzoneis
excessive,proceedasfollows:
•Increasetheholespacing
•Decreasetinesize
•Decreasetinedepth
•Removesomeofthetines
Theliftingactionthatsolidatinecreateswhenitpulls
fromtheturfmaycauseturfdamage.Thisliftcan
teartherootzoneifthedensityoftinesordiameter
oftinesistoohigh.

Whenaeratingwithlongersolidtines(i.e.,3/8x4
incheslong)orneedletypetines,thefrontoftheholes
maybecomeslottedortufted.T oregainexcellent
holequalityforthisconguration,trythefollowing:
•Calibratethetinegroundheight;refertoCalibrating
theTineGroundHeight(page36).
•Slowtheenginehighidlespeeddownto2800to
2900rpm.
Note:Becausetractionandcoringheadspeeds
increaseanddecreasetogetherwithengine
speed,holespacingisnotaffected.
Ifslowingtheenginespeeddoesimproveholequality
forthelongersolidorneedletypetines,adjustthe
