Using a digital multimeter set to the OHM or Continuity setting, verify the
following:
1. Switch open (PT O not engaged)
• Pin 2 and 4 should NOT have continuity
• Pin 2 and 1 should have continuity
• Pin 6 and 8 should NOT have continuity
• Pin 6 and 5 should have continuity
2. Switch closed (PT O engaged)
• Pin 2 and 4 should have continuity
• Pin 2 and 1 should NOT have continuity
• Pin 6 and 8 should have continuity
• Pin 6 and 5 should NOT have continuity
PT O Clutch Coil T ests
If the PT O clutch is not engaging or is suspected as a cause of electrical
problems, use the following electrical troubleshooting steps. These procedures
will help determine if the clutch has failed as a result of an electrical problem
or is the cause of one.
Clutch Coil Resistance Measurement T est
1. Park the machine on a level surface and disengage the PT O. Stop the
engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, then remove the key . Engage the
parking brake.
2. Disconnect the clutch wire connector .
3. Set the multimeter to measure resistance (OHMs setting).
4. Connect the meter lead wires to the terminals in the clutch connector .
• The clutch resistance spec should be 1.84 Ohms +/- 5%.
•
Clutch Coil Continuity to Ground T est
1. Park the machine on a level surface and disengage the PT O. Stop the
engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, then remove the key . Engage the
parking brake.
2. Disconnect the clutch wire connector .
3. Set the multimeter to measure resistance (OHMs setting).
