OCCUPANT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
The dr iver and f ront passenger seat
belt pr etensioners are designed to b e
activat ed i n r esponse to a severe fr on-
tal impact.
When the sensor detec ts a s evere frontal
impact , the f ront s eat belt s ar e qui ckl y
drawn back by the r etrac tors so that t he
belts s nugly res trai n the occupants .
The seat belt pretens ioners ar e ac tiv ated
even with no pas senger in the fr ont seat .
The seat bel t pr etensi oners and SRS air-
bags may not operat e t ogether in al l c olli-
sions .
The seat bel t pret ensioner system con-
sis ts mai nly of the foll owing components
and their locati ons are s hown in the i l-
lust ration.

2. SRS warni ng light
3. Seat belt pr etensi oner assembl ies
4. Air bag sensor ass embly
The s eat belt pretens ioners are cont rolled
by the airbag s ensor ass embly. The airbag
sensor assembly consi sts of a s afing s en-
sor and airbag sens or.
When the s eat belt pr etensi oners ar e ac ti-
vated, an operating noise may be heard
and a s mall amount of non−tox ic gas may
be released. Thi s does not indicate that
a fire is occ urri ng. This gas is normall y
harmless .
Once the s eat belt pretens ioners hav e
been ac tiv ated, t he s eat belt ret ract ors
remain locked.
If t he vehic le is inv olved in multi ple col li-
sions , the pretens ioner wil l acti vate for the
first collision, but will not activate for the
second or subs equent collisions .
