OCCUPANT RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
137
Toyota strongl y urg es t he use of ap-
propri ate child r estraint systems for
children.
If a child is too large for a child restraint
system, the child should s it in t he r ear
seat and must be res trai ned usi ng t he
vehic le’s seat belt. See “Seat belts ” on
page 99 i n this Sect ion for detail s.
CAUTION
D For eff ective protect ion in automo-
bile accident s and sudden stops, a
child must be pr operly rest rained,
using a seat bel t or chi ld restr aint
system depending on the age and
size of the child. Holdi ng a chi ld in
your arms is not a substitute for a
child restrai nt system. I n an acci-
dent, t he child can be cr ushed
against the windshiel d, or between
you and the vehicle’s interior.
D Toyota strongl y urges use of a
proper child r estraint system which
conforms to the siz e of the child,
instal led on the r ear seat . Accord-
ing to accident st atisti cs, t he child
is saf er when pr operly rest rained in
the rear seat than in the fr ont seat.
D Never inst all a rear −facing chi ld re-
strai nt system on t he f ront seat
with the airbag manual on−of f
switch in the “ON” position. In the
event of an acci dent, the f orce of
the rapid inflation of the front pas-
senger ai rbag can cause death or
serious injury to the child if the
rear−facing child restrain t syst em is
instal led on the f ront passenger
seat.
D Aforward−faci ng child restr aint sys-
tem should be al lowed to be
instal led on the f ront passenger
seat only when i t is unavoidabl e.
Always move the seat as far back
as possible, because t he front pas-
senger airbag could inflate with
considerabl e speed and force.
Otherwise, the child may be killed
or seriously injured.
D On vehicles with side airbags and
curtai n shi eld airbags, do not allow
the chi ld t o lean his/her head or
any par t of hi s/her body against the
door or the area of t he seat, fr ont
or center and roof side garnish
from which the side ai rbags or cur-
tain shield air bags deploy even if
the chi ld i s seated in the child r e-
strai nt syst em. I t i s danger ous if
the side airbag and/ or curt ain shield
airbag inflat e, and the impact could
cause death or seri ous injur y t o the
child.
D Make sure you have complied with
all instal lation in structi ons provi ded
by t he child restrai nt m anufacturer
and that the syst em is properl y se-
cured. If it is not secur ed properl y,
it may cause death o r serious injury
to t he chil d in t he event of a sud-
den stop, sudden swerve or acci-
dent.
D Do not allow children to play with
the seat bel t. If the belt becomes
twist ed ar ound a child’s neck, i t
may lead to choking or ot her seri-
ous i njuries that coul d r esult in
death. If t his occur s and the buckle
cannot be unfastened, sci ssors
should be used t o cut the belt.
