Driver seat
CAUTION
The SRS driver airbag deploys w ith
considerabl e force, and can cause
death or ser ious inj ury especial ly if
the driver is very cl ose to the airbag.
Since the risk zone for dr iver air bag
is the f irst 50—75 mm (2—3 in.) of
inflat ion, placing yoursel f 250 mm (10
in.) fr om your dr iver airbag provides
you wi th a clear mar gin of safety.
This di stance i s measured fr om the
center of the st eering wheel to your
breastbone. I f you sit l ess than 250
mm (10 in. ) away now, you can
change your dri ving posit ion in sever-
al ways:
D Move your seat to the rear as far
as you can while still r eaching t he
pedals comfortabl y.
D Slight ly recli ne t he back of the
seat. A lthough vehi cle designs vary,
many dri vers can achieve the 250
mm (10 in. ) dist ance, even with t he
driver seat all the way forwar d, sim-
ply by recl ining the back of the
seat somewhat. If reclining t he back
of your seat makes i t hard t o see
the r oad, r aise your self by using a
firm , non−slippery cushion, or rai se
the seat if your vehi cle has that
featur e.
D If your steer ing wheel is adj ustable,
tilt it downward. Thi s points the ai r-
bag towar d your chest instead of
your head and neck.
The seat should be adj usted as r ec-
ommended above, while still maintain-
ing control of the f oot pedals, steer-
ing wheel, and your view of the in-
strument panel contr ols.
