The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys-
tem) side air bags and curt ain shield air-
bags are designed t o provide f urther
protect ion for the driver, fr ont passen-
ger and rear outsi de passengers in
addition to the primary safety protec-
tion provi ded by t he seat belts.
In respons e t o a sev ere side impac t, the
SRS s ide airbags and curt ain shield ai r-
bags wor k wit h t he seat bel ts t o hel p
reduce injury by infl ating. The SRS side
airbags help r educe i njuri es mai nly t o the
driv er ’s or front pas senger’s chest and the
SRS curt ain shi eld air bags help r educe
injuries mainly to the driver’s, front pas-
senger’s or rear outs ide pass enger ’s head.
The SRS side ai rbag and cur tain shield
airbag on t he pas senger side are act ivat ed
even with no passenger i n t he front s eat
or rear outs ide seat.
The cur tain shield airbags may act ivate
even when the si de airbags ar e not acti-
vated.
Always wear y our seat belt proper ly.
The front pas senger airbag and SRS s ide
airbag on pass enger s eat c an be dis abled
only when installing a rear−facing child
restraint system on the front passenger
seat.

only as a supplement to the pr ima-
ry protect ion of the dr iver, and
front passenger and rear outside
passenger si de seat belt systems.
To ensure maximum pr otection in
an acci dent, the driver and all pas-
sengers i n the vehicle must wear
their seat belt s properly. Wear ing a
seat belt properly duri ng an acci-
dent reduces the chances of deat h
or seri ous injury or being t hrown
out of t he vehicle. For inst ructions
and precauti ons concerning t he seat
belt system, see “ Seat belt s” on
page 99 in this Section.
D Do not al low anyone t o lean hi s/her
head or any part of hi s/her body
against t he door or the area of the
seat, f ront pillar, rear pillar or roof
side rail from which the SRS side
airbag and cur tain shield air bag
deploy even if he/she is a chi ld
seated in the chil d restrai nt system.
It is dangerous if the SRS side air-
bag and cur tain shi eld airbag i n-
flat e, and the i mpact of the deploy-
ing ai rbag coul d cause deat h or se-
rious injury to the child. For in-
