If you have sufficient fuel...
Before making these checks, make sure
you have fol lowed the cor rect s tart ing pro-
cedure giv en i n “ How t o s tart t he engine”
on page 410 in Sec tion 3. Also, chec k
whether the ot her key s will s tart the en-
gine. If they work , your k ey may be bro-
ken. Have the key c hecked at any autho-
riz ed Toyot a dealer or repairer, or anot her
duly quali fied and equipped pr ofess ional.
If none of y our keys work , there may be
a malfunction in the immobilizer system.
Call any authoriz ed Toy ota dealer or re-
pairer, or another duly quali fied and
equipped profes sional . (See “Key s” on
page 22 or 25 in Sect ion 1−2.)
If the engi ne is not turni ng over or is
turni ng over too slowly—
1. Chec k that the batt ery ter minals are
tight and clean.
2. If the battery terminals are O.K., switch
on the interior l ight.
3. If t he light is out, dim or goes out
when the s tart er is c ranked, the batt ery
is di schar ged. You may try jump star t-
ing. See “ (d) J ump star ting” on page
439 for furt her instr ucti ons.
4. With smart entry and start system—If
the engi ne does not star t ev en after
the batt ery has been rechar ged or re-
place, s ee “(e) St arti ng the engine af ter
a battery di schar ge” on page 442 for
furt her inst ruct ion.
If the light is O.K., but the engine s til l wil l
not star t, it needs adj ustm ent or repair.
Call any authoriz ed Toy ota dealer or re-
pairer, or another duly quali fied and
equipped profes sional .
NOTICE
Do not pull− or push −start the ve-
hicle. It may damage t he vehi cle or
cause a collision when the engine
start s. Also the DPF (Diesel Par ticu-
late Fi lter System) catalyt ic converter,
the DPNR (Di esel Parti culate−NOx Re-
duction System) catalyt ic convert er
and the catalyti c convert er may over-
heat and become a fi re hazard.
If the engine t urns over at i ts normal
speed but will not start —
It needs adjust ment or repair. Call any
authori zed Toyot a dealer or r epairer, or
another duly qual ifi ed and equipped pro-
fess ional, f or assi stanc e.
