Overview

The UEC DSD 5000 is a VAST™ certified digital set-top box (STB) designed for receiving free-to-view satellite television and radio broadcasts in Australia. It supports both High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) services. The device is equipped with dual DVB-S2 tuners, allowing for simultaneous reception and recording of two programs from different channels, depending on the broadcaster's allocation of channels on the satellite.

Function Description:

The primary function of the DSD 5000 is to receive and decode VAST™ digital satellite television and radio signals. It offers a comprehensive user experience through its Electronic Program Guide (EPG), recording capabilities, and streaming portal.

Usage Features:

  • First Time Installation: Guides the user through setting TV resolution, time zone, selecting a USB storage device (if connected), and performing a satellite channel search. The STB automatically performs a channel search each time it starts from a fully powered-down state.
  • VAST™ Registration: Requires smart card activation via MyVAST or MySatTV websites or call centers to access authorized services.
  • Remote Control Unit (RCU): Features a power button, alphanumeric keypad, program information button, PVR button, EPG guide button, menu navigation buttons (OK, arrows, BACK, EXIT), mute, volume up/down, channel up/down, media playback controls (REW, PLAY, FWD, STOP, REC, SUB, HELP), and color function buttons with context-dependent actions.
  • Live Satellite Television:
    • Channel List: Accessed via the OK button, displaying a full list of available channels.
    • Sort Function: Allows sorting channels by A to Z, Z to A, Encrypted First, Free First, or Satellite.
    • Find Function: Enables searching for channels using an on-screen QWERTY keyboard (uppercase/lowercase), symbols, or T9 input.
    • Information Banner: Provides brief descriptions of current and upcoming programs, date, time, channel name/number, signal/quality levels, and a progress bar. A second press of the Info button displays detailed program information including resolution, display format, age rating, and subtitle availability.
  • Main Menu: Provides access to:
    • Settings: Configuration options for installation, user preferences, parental control, system information, and operator messages.
    • Electronic Program Guide (EPG): Displays current and upcoming programs for up to 8 days, with various viewing options.
    • Scheduler: Manages pending and upcoming recordings and reminders.
    • Recordings: Views, edits, and deletes recorded programs on an attached recording device.
    • UEC Streaming Portal: Accesses five 'On-demand' services from Australian national broadcasters (ABC iview, SBS On Demand, Plus7, 9Now, 10 Play).
  • Settings Menu:
    • Installation: Includes Satellite Channels Search, Dish Installation (with Dish Alignment Help map), Internet Setup, and Factory Reset. Access requires a PIN-code (default 1234).
    • User Preferences: Customizes PVR setup, video resolution, audio output, subtitle settings, time zone, banner display duration, virtual keyboard default, and languages.
      • Recording Settings: Configures USB storage device, recording lead-time/delay, timeshift length, automatic timeshift, jump forward/backward, series record, and device formatting/checking.
      • Video Settings: Adjusts resolution, screen ratio, and display format.
      • Audio Settings: Configures SPDIF Digital Audio Output, HDMI Digital Audio Output, and SPDIF Audio Delay.
      • Subtitle On/Off: Enables or disables subtitles by default.
      • Languages: Sets 1st and 2nd audio language preferences from a comprehensive list.
    • Parental Control: Blocks programs and recordings based on broadcaster ratings. Requires a PIN-code (default 1234) for access and changes. Incorrect PIN entry three times will lock the STB, requiring a factory reset (except for LNB and parental control settings).
    • System: Displays system information (smartcard status, software version, build timestamp, system uptime, satellite signal/quality), Irdeto CA Status, Software Update options, Software License, and System Reboot.
  • Recording Features:
    • Recording inside EPG: Allows setting recordings or reminders for highlighted programs. Options include recording the entire event, entire series, custom duration, banner reminder, or channel change reminder.
    • Initiation Recording: Pressing the Record button during live TV initiates immediate recording.
    • My Recordings Menu: Lists all recordings with details such as date, title, duration, parental guidance rating, type (locked), and status (watched/unwatched).
    • Recording Icons: Visual indicators for Event Based Recording in Progress, Custom Duration Recording in Progress, Series Recording Scheduled, Completed Recording (Ticked for Viewed), Incomplete Recording (Ticked for Viewed), and Error Encountered During Recording.
    • Recording Management: Delete, rename, sort, and search recordings.
  • External Storage Setup: Connects a compatible external hard drive or USB stick to enable PVR functions. The device guides the user through selecting and formatting the storage device (EXT4 Linux format recommended).

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Disconnect from power before cleaning. Use a very lightly dampened cloth (no solvents).
  • Software Updates: Typically performed automatically Over the Air (OTA) when the STB is taken off standby. Manual updates are available via the UEC website or Service Centre.
  • Factory Reset: Resets all user preferences, data, and settings (except parental control and LNB settings) to default. This is a more drastic measure than a system reboot.
  • System Reboot: Performs a restart of the STB, which can fix minor issues. Can be initiated from the System menu or by holding the front panel Standby button for 4 seconds.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common problems such as the STB not switching ON, no channels found, no picture, no sound, and remote control not working.
  • Support Information: Contact details for NAS Australia (importer, distributor, and service authority) and UEC Service Centre for technical assistance.
  • Warranty: Complies with Australian Consumer Law. Warranty period begins on the date of purchase. Faulty STBs should be taken to an authorized dealer for repair.
  • Safety Precautions: Includes warnings regarding ventilation, attachments, TV connection, location (indoor use only, avoid heat/direct sunlight, stable surface), lightning/power surges, parts replacement/repairs, electric shock (never open, no metal/inflammable material through vents, no wet hands on power plug, disconnect during storms), and product damage (do not use if faulty, no foreign objects in smartcard/ventilation slots, accessible power socket).
  • Battery Handling: Warnings against heat, extreme sunlight, fire; keep out of reach of children; remove batteries for prolonged non-use; dispose of according to statutory law; never charge normal batteries; never throw batteries into open fire.
  • Disposal: Do not dispose of STB, other electronics, or batteries in regular household waste; contact an E-Waste facility.
