Advanced warning: beacons flashing before arriving at the signals, warning vehicles to
prepare to stop.
Call: a demand made by vehicles or pedestrians for right-of-way that is registered to the V-
Touch Controller.
Clearance interval (red clearance + yellow): In traffic phases cycle the amount of time it
takes vehicles to clear the zone immediately following the green light and before the steady
red signal and an opposing traffic movement commences. The traffic light shows yellow and
then red.
Cycle: see Signal plan.
Interval: the amount of time that you allocate for the signal (light) to display a color.
Phase: that portion of the sequence/cycle (the green, yellow change and red clearance
intervals) that serves one group of traffic movements. When a phase changes, one or more
traffic movements are stopped and one or more traffic movements starts.
Phase diagram: illustration showing the intersection and the right-of-way traffic movement.
Red clearance (all red): an interval that can follow the yellow and during which all signals at
the intersection display a steady red light. This interval is to ensure that no vehicle is
remaining in the zone when the right-of-way (green light) passes to an opposing traffic
movement.
Signal plan (cycle): one complete sequence (rotation) of signal indications around all the
traffic signals that comprise the intersection or work site.
Traffic phases signal plan: pre-timed sequence (cycle) of signals controlling movement of
traffic without calls from detectors/triggers. The timing is based on the usual traffic flow
conditions.
