CHAPTER 10
Quality of Service (QoS)
10.1 Overview
Quality of Service (QoS) refers to bot h a net works abilit y to deliver dat a with m inim um delay, and
the networking m et hods used t o control the use of bandwidth. Wit hout QoS, all traffic dat a is
equally likely to be dropped when t he network is congest ed. This can cause a reduction in network
perform ance and m ake t he netw ork inadequate for t im e- critical applicat ion such as video-on-
dem and.
Configure QoS on t he Device to group and prioritize applicat ion t raffic and fine- tune net work
perform ance. Set t ing up QoS involves t hese steps:
1 Configure classifiers t o sort t raffic into different flows.
2 Assign priority and define act ions t o be perform ed for a classified traffic flow.
The Device assigns each packet a priority and then queues the packet accordingly. Packet s assigned
a high priority are processed m ore quickly t han those with low priority if t here is congestion,
allowing t im e-sensitive applications to flow m ore sm oot hly. Tim e- sensitive applicat ions include bot h
those that require a low level of latency (delay) and a low level of jit t er ( variations in delay) such as
Voice over I P (VoI P) or I nternet gam ing, and t hose for which jit ter alone is a problem such as
I nternet radio or st ream ing video.
This chapt er cont ains inform at ion about configuring QoS and editing classifiers.
10.1.1 What You Can Do in this Chapter
The Ge ne ra l screen lets you enable or disable QoS and set t he upstream bandwidth (

) .
The Queue Set up screen let s you configure QoS queue assignm ent (
Section 10.4 on page 170) .
The Cla ss Set up screen let s you add, edit or delete QoS classifiers (
Section 10.5 on page 172) .
The Policer Set u p screen lets you add, edit or delet e QoS policers (
Section 10.5 on page 172).
The Monit or screen let s you view t he Device's QoS- relat ed packet st atistics (
Section 10.7 on
page 179
) .
