Log
20.1 Overview
The web configurat or allows you to choose which cat egor ies of events and/ or alert s t o have the
Device log and then display t he logs or have the Device send them t o an adm inist rat or (as e- m ail)
or t o a syslog server.

Alerts and Logs
An alert is a type of log t hat warrant s m ore serious att ention. They include syst em errors, at t acks
( access cont rol) and att em pted access t o blocked web sit es. Som e categor ies such as Syst e m
Er rors consist of bot h logs and alerts. You m ay differentiat e them by t heir color in t he View Log
screen. Alerts display in red and logs display in black.
Syslog Overview
The syslog prot ocol allows devices to send event not ificat ion m essages across an I P network t o
syslog servers t hat collect the event m essages. A syslog-enabled device can generate a syslog
m essage and send it to a syslog server.
Syslog is defined in RFC 3164. The RFC defines the packet form at , content and system log related
inform at ion of syslog m essages. Each syslog m essage has a facilit y and severit y level. The syslog
facility ident ifies a file in t he syslog server. Refer t o t he docum ent at ion of your syslog program for
det ails. The following t able describes t he syslog severity levels.

CODE SEVERITY
0 Em ergency: The syst em is unusable.
1 Alert: Action m ust be taken imm ediately.
2 Critical: The syst em condition is crit ical.
3 Error: There is an err or condition on the system .
4 Warning: There is a warning condit ion on the syst em .
