Section 2 Application
2.1 General IED application
The Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is used for the protection, control and monitoring
of overhead lines and cables in solidly, impedance earthed or isolated networks. The IED
can be used up to the high voltage levels. It is suitable for the protection of heavily loaded
lines and multi-terminal lines where the requirement for tripping is one-, two- and/or
three-phase. The IED is also suitable as back-up protection of power transformers,
reactors and so on.
Distance protection with quadrilateral or mho characteristics is available. The full scheme
distance protection provides protection of power lines with high sensitivity and low
requirement on remote end communication. The six zones have fully independent
measuring and setting which gives high flexibility for all types of lines. Load
encroachment and adaptive reach compensation are included.
The modern technical solution offers fast operating time of typically less than one cycle.
It co-operates with the synchronism check function with high-speed or delayed reclosing.
A high impedance differential protection can be used to protect T-feeders or line reactors.
High set instantaneous phase and ground overcurrent, four step directional or non-
directional delayed phase and ground overcurrent, ground fault for not direct earthed
systems, thermal overload and two step under and overvoltage protection are examples of
the available functions allowing the user to fulfill any application requirement.
The distance phase and ground fault protection, and the directional ground overcurrent
protection can communicate with remote end in any teleprotection communication
scheme. With the included remote communication, following the IEEE C37.94 standard,
up to 192 channels for intertrip and binary signals are available per LDCM
communication module in the communication between the IEDs.
The IED can also be provided with full bay control and interlocking functionality
including co-operation with the synchronism check function to allow integration of the
main or back-up control.
Out of Step function is available to separate power system sections close to electrical
centre at occurring out of step.
