Appendix A
Upgrading Flash ROM Update Process
Since the PCI SATA ll RAID controller features ash rmware, it is
not necessary to change the hardware ash chip in order to up-
grade the RAID rmware. The user can simply re-program the old
rmware through the In-Band PCI-X/PCIe bus or Out-of-Band Enth-
ernet port McRAID Storage manager. New releases of the rmware
are available in the form of a DOS le on the shipped CD or Areca’s
web site. The les available at the FTP site for each model contain
the following les in each version:
ARCXXXNNN.BIN Software Binary Code (where “XXXX” refers to
the model name and “NNNN” refers to the software code type)
ARCXXXBIOS.BIN : PCI card BIOS for system board using
ARCXXXBOOT.BIN : RAID controller hardware initialization
ARCXXXFIRM.BIN :RAID kernel program
ARCXXXMBR0.BIN:Master Boot Record for supporting Dual Flash
Image in the SATA ll RAID controller
README.TXT contains the history information of the software code
change in the main directory. Read this le rst to make sure you
are upgrading to the proper binary le. Select the right le for the
upgrade. Normally, user upgrades the ARCXXXBIOS.BIN for system
M/B compatibility and ARCXXXFIRM.BIN for RAID function up-
grades.
Note:
Please update all Binary Code (BIOS, BOOT and FIRM) before
you reboot system. Otherwise, a mixed rmware package may
hang the controller.
