OPERATION
PHONE SECTION
The PHONE SECTION is comprised of a SELECT BUTTON, four BUS
ASSIGN BUTTONS (PGM, AUD, MONO1, and MONO2), a CUE BUT-
TON, a four character DISPLAY, two FADERS, and ON and OFF BUT-
TONS. [NOTE — This section also refers to the following controls and
displays located in the CONTROL SECTION: CHANNEL DISPLAY,
SOURCE DISPLAY, SELECT KNOB, and ENTER BUTTON.]
The Phone Section Is Different Than a Normal
Fader
There are some important differences between a standard fader and the
phone section. The phone section controls the audio for two callers. Not only
do we have to control where the audio for each caller is going, and at what
signal strength, but we also need to control the audio that the caller hears (also
known as caller feed). Since the signal input to the section is always the caller,
there is no need to display that information. Instead, the DISPLAY in the
phone section shows the caller feed.
Also, the callers may need to hear one feed when the phone section is ON
(on air) and a different feed when the phone section is OFF (off air).
To prevent possible feedback and annoying echo, the caller feed never
contains the caller’s own voice. Each caller feed will, however, contain the
voice of the other caller (if there is one), at a level determined by the other
caller’s fader setting.
So, operation of the phone section is different than operation of a normal
fader, and you need to read the instructions carefully to make the most of the
caller features.
Select Button - Selecting What the Caller Hears
As noted above, the audio selected by the phone section is the audio the
callers will hear, and that audio may be different depending on whether the
caller is off air or on air.
On Air Caller Feed Selection
Make sure that the phone section is ON (ON BUTTON is lit). Press the
SELECT BUTTON. The button lights, the CHANNEL DISPLAY in the
monitor section shows “CALL ON”, and the SOURCE DISPLAY shows the
current on air caller feed. The ENTER BUTTON begins to flash. Turn the
SELECT KNOB until the desired on air caller feed shows in the SOURCE
DISPLAY, then press the ENTER BUTTON (the ENTER BUTTON stops
flashing) to select the source. The source name shows in the phone section
DISPLAY, and the SELECT BUTTON light goes off. Each caller will hear
the displayed source, along with the other caller’s voice, when the phone is on
air. In each caller’s feed, the caller’s own voice is absent.
