1.Cleanthecarbondust,dirtandoilfromthecommutator.Visuallyinspectthecommutatorforworn,burnedor
glazedareas.Checkforlooseorraisedcommutatorbars.Slightroughnessofthecommutatorcanbepolished
awaywith400grit(orner)sandpaper.SeefollowingCAUTION.
CAUTION
•Donotuseemeryclothonthecommutator.Particlesofemeryareconductiveandmayshort-circuit
thecommutatorbars.Donotuseoilorlubricantsonthecommutatororbrushes.
2.Usingamicrometer,measuretheoutsidediameterattwopointsalongthecommutator.Ifthecommutatoroutside
diameterislessthan1.535inches(39mm),replacethearmatureandbearings(Figure19-10,Page19-8).
