Beforesuspectingthethrottlebodyasthecauseofpoorengineperformance,makesurethefuelandignitionsystems
areinproperoperatingcondition.Checkthefollowingitems:
•Sparkplugandgapcondition.SeeSparkPlugonpage20-5.
•Airlterelement.SeeAirFilteronpage21-12.
•Airintakesystem(forrestrictionofairow).SeeAirIntakeSystemonpage21-12.
•Exhaustsystem(forrestrictions).SeeExhaustSystem–SubaruEX40onpage22-1.
•Fuelpump.SeeFuelPumpModuleonpage21-17.
•Fuelline.SeeFuelLineonpage21-15.
•Fuelpickupscreenorlter.SeeFuelFilteronpage21-23.

1.TurnthekeyswitchtotheOFFpositionandremovethekey,placetheForward/ReversehandleintheNEUTRAL
position,andchockthewheels.
2.Disconnectbattery.SeeDisconnectingtheBattery-GasolineVehiclesonpage1-3.
3.Ifequipped,removeairdeectorfromtopofengine.
4.Ifnecessary,removefueltanktoincreaseaccesstothethrottlebody(1).SeeFuelTankRemoval,Section
21,Page21-20.
5.Cleanthethrottlebody(1)andsurroundingarea(Figure21-2,Page21-4).
6.Disconnectbreatherhose(2)fromairintakeadapter(3).
7.Disconnectgovernorcablefrombracket(4).
8.DisconnectfuelinjectorandMAPsensor.
9.Removespringclampssecuringfuelline(6)andventhose(5)tothrottlebody(1)anddisconnectventhose(5).
10.Disconnectfuelline(6)anddrainintoanappropriatecontainer.SeefollowingWARNING.Temporarilyplug
fuellinetopreventfuelleakage.
WARNING
•Fuelmaybeunderpressure.Useextremecautionwhendisconnectingfuellinetopreventthesprayof
fuelontohotengine.SeeRelievingFuelPressureonpage21-2.
•Carefullydrainanyfuelintoanapprovedcontainer.Adddrainedfuelbackintofueltankordispose
ofproperly.
11.Loosenairintakehoseclampanddisconnectairintakehose.
12.Removetwoangenuts(7)andslideairintakeadapter(3),bracket(4),gaskets(8),insulator(9),andthrottle
body(1)offthreadedstuds.
