Return to TOC Curtis AC F4-A Motor Controller – August 2020
TRACTION SYSTEMS
1. Verify that Motor Technology = 0-ACIM and Feedback Type = 1-encoder. is conguration,
and these settings, are required to run this procedure.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Motor Technology: 0 = ACIM.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Position Sensor Type: = quadrature encoder.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Motor Type: = 0.
2. Enter the number of motor poles in the Motor Poles parameter.
e vast majority of induction motors will have 4 poles (i.e., 2 pole pairs).
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Motor Poles.
3. Enter the desired Max Test Speed for the characterization test. Note that this speed might not be
achieved, depending on system characteristics; this is normal. A typical setting is approximately
1/3 of the maximum motor speed in the application.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Max Test Speed.
4. Enter the desired Max Test Current for the characterization test. A typical setting is 70% (70%
of the maximum motor or controller rating, whichever is higher). Generally, reducing this
parameter is only needed when motor heating during the test is a problem, or resonance in the
motor occurs at high currents.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Max Test Current.
5. Using the Programmer, clear the Fault History.
Programmer: System Monitor » Faults History » Clear History.
6. Ensure that Interlock is enabled.
Programmer: System Monitor » Inputs » Interlock (= On).
7. Set Test Enable = On.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Test Enable.
8. Note that no cutbacks should be in eect (thermal, voltage, etc.) when these tests are run.
In addition, the power limiting maps should not cut back current over the characterization
speed range. Check and verify that the power limiting map parameters are set to 100% over the
characterization speed range.
Programmer: Controller Setup » Current Limits » Power Limits » Drive Limiting Map menu (= 100 %).
9. Set Test rottle = +1.
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Test Throttle.
10. Aer approximately 30 or more seconds, the motor will begin to rotate. It is critical to verify the
motor is turning in the FORWARD vehicle direction. If it is not, set Test rottle = 0, wait for
the motor to come to a stop, then set Test rottle = –1.
Notes: (1) is step runs faster if TACT is not running.
(2) If the motor starts to accelerate then slows down again, you may need to
increase Max Test Current (see step 4, above):
Programmer: AC Motor Setup » Induction Motor » Characterization Tests » Max Test Current.
