Glossary
The following definitions apply specifically to printers unless otherwise
stated.
additive colors
Colors that are produced by adding together the varying intensities of
three colors: red, green, and blue. See also RGB.
bidirectional printing
See high speed printing.
brightness
The lightness or darkness level of an image.
characters per inch (cpi)
A measure of the size of text characters, sometimes referred to as pitch.
character table
A collection of letters, numbers, and symbols that provides you with the
characters used in a particular language.
CMYK
Cyan (blue-green), magenta, yellow, and black. These colored inks are
used to create the subtractive system array of printed colors.
condensed printing
Printing in which the width of each character is approximately 60% of the
width of standard characters. Useful for fitting wide tables or
spreadsheets onto the paper.
contrast
The amount of difference between the darkest and lightest colors in an
image. The greater the difference, the higher the contrast value.
cpi
See characters per inch.
default
A value or setting that takes effect when the equipment is turned on,
reset, or initialized.
