Recommended Jump
Starting Procedure
Service Interval : As required
1. Chec k the w eak batter y for ter minal cor rosion
(white , g reen, or blue “sno w”), it m ust be cleaned
off prior to jump star ting . Clean and tighten
connections as necessar y .
CAUTION
Cor r osion or loose connections can cause
unw anted electrical v olta ge spik es at an ytime
during the jump star ting pr ocedur e.
Do Not attempt to jump star t with loose or
cor r oded batter y ter minals or dama ge to the
engine or EFI may occur .
DANGER
J ump star ting a w eak batter y that is crack ed,
fr oz en, has lo w electr ol yte lev el, or an
open/shor ted batter y cell, can cause an
explosion r esulting in serious per sonal injur y .
Do Not jump star t a w eak batter y if these
conditions exist.
2. Mak e sure the booster is a g ood and fully c harg ed
lead acid batter y at 12.6 v olts or g reater . Use
properly sized jumper cables (4 to 6 A W G) with
shor t lengths to reduce v oltag e drop betw een
systems . Mak e sure the cables are color coded or
labeled for the cor rect polarity .
CAUTION
Connecting the jumper ca bles incor r ectl y
(wr ong polarity) can immediatel y dama ge the
electrical and/or EFI system.
Be cer tain of batter y ter minal polarity and
jumper ca ble polarity when hooking up
batteries.
Note: T he follo wing instr uctions are adapted
from the SAE J1494 R ev . Dec . 2001 Batter y
Booster Cables Surface V ehicle R ecommended
Practice (SAE Society of A utomoti v e
Engineers).
W ARNING
Batteries contain acid and pr oduce explosi v e
gases.
Shield the ey es and f ace fr om the batteries
at all times.
Do Not lean o v er the batteries.
Note: Be sure the v ent caps are tight and lev el.
Place a damp cloth, if a v ailable , o v er any v ent
caps on both batteries . Be sure the v ehicles do
not touc h and that both electrical systems are
off and at the same rated system v oltag e . T hese
instr uctions are for neg ati v e g round systems only .
3. Connect the positi v e (+) cable to the positi v e (+)
ter minal of the disc harg ed batter y that is wired to
the star ter or solenoid as sho wn in Figure 18 .
