“Zero-Channel RAID“ + Backup Drives
Additional controller for a performant backup solution
Attention ! If you use the “Zero-Channel RAID“
without an additional HDD-Box, channel A is always connected to the SCSI backplane
for the 6 HD`s and channel B is connected to the backup-drives. ( Configuration 1a )
In this configuration it is possible, that with high load on the HD channel and
concurrent backup operation no optimal backup performance can be obtained
( Start-Stop-operation ), because the Zero-Channel RAID5 I/O-processor internally
always gives priority to the HD-access.
There are three possibilities to solve this problem.
Solution 1: Start the backup only if reduced HD load can be expected.
( Limited user-activities for instance over night ).
Solution 2: Configuration of an additional SCSI controller
for backup is possible, but the cable has to be disconnected from Channel B
and connected to the SCSI controller by the customer
This Solution 2.) however is not recommended
because the more performant and regarding cost equivalent Solution 3.)
can be ordered as standard configuration ex works.
SCSI-Controller for a performant backup solution
- Cabling of backup drives with additional SCSI-Controller
=> Internal cable is used for SCSI-controller and backup
Main memory 1 GB Main memory 2 GB
If a separate SCSI controller is required for the backup drives then the backup cable ( red, broken line )
has to be disconnected from connector B and then connected to the SCSI controller.
Solution 3: With this solution only a 1-channel Raid-Controlller for the 6 hard disks has to be ordered
instead of the “Zero-Channel RAID“ + additional SCSI-Controller
An external SCSI option is additional possible with this solutuion.
